Myofascial release therapy is a treatment that is addressed towards the myofascial tissue – the resilient membrane that wraps around muscles, which also provides connections and support.
Pain is a common reason that clients seek out myofascial release therapy, as they are experiencing pain in “trigger points”; specific points of pain in the myofascial tissue. These points can oftentimes be very difficult to target, so myofascial release therapy is regularly implemented over a broad area of tissue so as to make sure that the trigger points are treated.
Before the myofascial release therapy session starts, your therapist will speak to you about problem areas that you would like to address.
Throughout the treatment, your manual therapist will locate and target areas where trigger points are restricting movement and causing pain or soreness. The process consists of finding tight areas, massaging and stretching those areas to loosen trigger points, and moving on to the next. Rinse and repeat.
In some instances, they may work on areas that you haven’t identified as pain-inducing, but the intent is to increase elasticity and flexibility in a broad area of muscle and tissue by releasing trigger points that they have identified.
Myofascial release therapy is a relatively specialized area of therapeutic massage, with a number of dubious practitioners in the niche. At Calgary Muscle and Soft Tissue Clinic, we employ only the most qualified manual therapists, with a strict no-tipping policy in place to ensure the utmost professionalism.
